Information for visiting international students

Each year the department accepts a number of visiting undergraduate students, from Europe, North America, and elsewhere.

Erasmus exchange

european countries participating in the esnThe majority of visiting students from Europe come from EU countries and are here under various exchange schemes, especially the Erasmus scheme. For details of this see the University's Erasmus Exchange page.

Students from North America

Visiting students from North America fall mainly into two classes. First, there are a number of students here on Freshman Year Abroad schemes. Such students take philosophy as one of their first year subjects in just the same way as UK undergraduates do; they typically also take two other subjects. At the end of the first year they decide whether to continue at Edinburgh to take the MA, or to return to a North American university, where they are normally assigned credit for the courses that were taken in Edinburgh. Details of how to apply are given on the University's Freshman Year Abroad Scheme page.

north americaThe second large group from North America consists of students doing a junior year, or semester, abroad. Such students take either second year or honours courses, depending on the amount of philosophy that they have studied in their home universities. They might also take courses from other Edinburgh departments. Amongst honours courses, we recommend that students take the 'core courses': 'Metaphysics and Epistemology' and 'History of Modern Philosophy' in odd numbered years (eg. 2003-4); and 'Ancient Philosophy', 'Moral and Political Philosophy' and 'Mind and Language' in even numbered years (e.g. 2004-5). Details of how to apply are given on the University's Visiting Students page.

Other exchange schemes

In addition, a number of Visiting Students from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China and Singapore come under exchange schemes agreed with their universities. For a list of universities that participate in this scheme, and details of how to apply, see the University's International Exchange page.

Students from Dartmouth College

Finally, the philosophy department welcomes around 15 students each year from Dartmouth College. Useful information for them can be found at the Dartmouth Information webpage.
