Postgraduate Philosophy @ Edinburgh
Overview
We have one of the world's largest and most vibrant postgraduate communities in Philosophy, with around 100 postgraduate students. We also host an extremely active research community. Indeed, in the latest UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 65% of the Department of Philosophy`s research activity was judged to be either `world-leading` or `internationally excellent`. As a guide, this puts us on a par with the Departments of Philosophy at Oxford and Cambridge, and so confirms our status as one of the leading Departments of Philosophy in the UK for research (in the previous RAE, in 2001, we were one of only a small handful of Departments of Philosophy in the UK to obtain the highest ranking of 5*).
While we have research strengths in all the main areas of Philosophy, we have particular expertise in the following five areas:
We particularly welcome PhD, MPhil and MSc by Research students in these areas of Philosophy.
At MSc level we host a popular Philosophy MSc/Dip taught programme. Students on this programme can choose between taking a general Philosophy MSc/Dip degree or opting to take a specialization in one of our five core research areas: ancient philosophy, early modern philosophy, epistemology, ethics, and mind and cognition.
We also run dedicated MSc/Dip programmes in Ancient Philosophy (run jointly with the Department of Classics) and Ethics and Political Philosophy (run jointly with the Department of Politics and International Relations).
